I just converted my new mast from diamonds to spreaders. What is the width between the shrouds at the spreader tips and what angle? Mast is like a noodle right now.

The dimensions will depend on how high up the mast you have mounted the spreaders. If you set the spreaders so that they deflect the shrouds roughly one to on and a half inches outwards and backwards, you will be in the right area. Put the mast up without the shrouds in the spreaders, and adjust the spreaders so that they sit behind the shrouds, with the ends of the spreaders 1 to 1.5 inches ooutside the shrouds. Once that is done, try it and see how it works. If you have a gorrilla on the wire, you can extend the spreaders to stiffen the mast if you think you can handle more power.

Thunderguts, Thanks, we mounted the spreaders at the same location the diamonds were located. I will adjust them this weekend to see the results.
Cheers,,

You may find the spreaders are high at this point, but it will depend on your crew weight.

Where in relation to the diamond spreaders do you mount the new shroud spreaders. I have a very old boat that I believe was fitted with a new mast in the early 70's. It does not have double spreaders, but has a welded tang for the spin attachment and the shrouds are externally mounted. Anyone familiar with this? Original boat was a Plastrend, USA 45, appx 1967. Any info greatly appreciated, Rick

Thunderguts, Thanks once again. My crew is about 190 lbs (8.48 stones?) 86 kg. Do European boat owners move the spreaders up and down to adjust for crew weight?

I'll try to get them on later today or tomorrow. The mast is laying on my J-24 Trailer and a little hard to see. Thanks for any help, Rick

your mast sounds similar to the one that came with stokka.
is it kinda gold in colour?
of all the tempest masts in Calgary, ours is the only on with an external spinnaker pole lift.

Yes, it is gold. I actually got two of these masts when I got the boat. ( the other is white) A few of the other boat here also have external topping lift blocks, but none have the welded tang for the forestay. Still looking for spreader placement for new spreader setup. Will probably go halfway between deck partners and shroud tangs if no further info available. This is appx 1 foot lower the current diamond spreaders. Thanks for your help, Rick

Dont do anything yet - I will measure my mast this weekend, and give you the dimension from the bottom of the mast to the centre of the spreaders on my Mk 2. The older boat (1974 Mader) has the spreaders too high for my crew weight (Helm and crew approx 175 Lb each) - the newer one works much better.

Thanks for your help. I just removed the old ones and will wait for advice. How does the ht affect performance and crew wt. I usually race at 360-380 lbs. Rick

Spreader height and length affects the stiffness of the mast. If you have a stiffer rig, you will need both a heavier crew to hold the boat upright and a quicker crew to be able to deal with the stiffer, more reactive rig.
However, Length is far les important than ht.

Thanks, Is higher on the mast stiffer. I never have recieved a measurement so I will go at about the same ht as before and alter spreader length unless someone has more measurement advice. Need to get it together this weekend. Good sailing, Rick

Yes, higher on the mast is stiffer. If you put the spreaders high up you are supporting the mast against sideways bend higher up.
