Yes I know this was on the old board, but we have to start this off somehow!
So here goes.
Originally posted by ericdon which I have copied and pasted here (I hope you don`t mind ericdon).
"I would like to start a debate on how we can promote the International Tempest class. As a relative newcomer to the class ( 2years) I enjoy the boat and the class immensely, but what bothers me is the class does not seem to promote itself in the UK, from what I can see is we have a few clubs where the boat is sailed. Championships are held at these venues because of the captive crews and boats there appears a reluctance to travel, the Northerns as an example when only one travelling boat turns up. There is no doubt it’s a great boat to sail, what really makes the class so attractive, is you can pick up a boat for less than 2K and be competitive in the UK, Europe is a little different without promotion the class could wither and die. If travelling to different venues is a problem what are they, and can we overcome them".
So all of you who posted replies why not do so again, and lets continue with the discussion.

There doesn't seem to be any reason why we can't have the southerns at a random club down there (Sorry - I'm a northern lad and don't know any club names south of Shap) or a northerns at somewhere like Keilder or Loch Lomond - both of which have reasonable sized clubs. Craining onto a trailer that can get wet would be the only problem.

The class needs to attend a major event where a number of other boats will be there. The class needs to have the World's at Kieler Woche or something else in a major venue.
I was speaking with the person who rigs 505's for Hasso Plattner, a very influential person, he had no idea that the Tempest was still around.
Again a major event with a LOT of Tempests will promote it quite well.

Apart from the issue of cranes, getting enough boats together at events at non captive clubs is going to be a problem. Clubs are not going to organise events for 10 boats. We do not have enough boats that will travel in the country at the moment.
One avenue is to work with other classes. I had a great time at the Fast Sail at Grafham earlier this year.
First point is to support these events. They get press coverage. Some venues like Queen Mary are no good to us however.
Secondly, let's try to arrange meetings with classes. I know John Robinson has worked on this. One possible class is the Javelin. They appear to have nationals of less than 20 boats, would be comfortable on the same courses as us and those that I met at Fast Sail seemed good guys.
If events like these are arranged we have then got to turn out in good numbers. Make sure that their timing works with likely competitors and then - if you say that you are going to an event.. turn up!

What's the biggest sailing event in Europe? With the most attendees from many different classes?

Badly Drawn has mentioned the problem we can only get a few boats willing to travel and realisticly we can only expect about five boats to go to an event.
We need some method of encouraging peoplle to travel. Perhaps but the annual fees up and give people a refund at the end of the year if they travel to different events.

Do people simply forget when an event is? Yes they do (You all know who you are) Is there simply not enough attention payed to publicising the events? Yes they are placed on the website, but as has been witnessed, not everybody looks at it, we have regular members who for one reason or another do not actively get involved with this forum(can`t think why). Members as well as public need to be constantly reminded of things that are happening or they will lose interest, believe that "no-one else bothers, then why should I?" What about targeting every known Tempest owner (60 plus listed in the boat & onwners) , member or otherwise with the event programme for next year now! Remember that people have holiday time and some may have already booked all their time already, if you want more to attend then they need to know now! The earlier that the programme for next year is set, then and only then can you look towards other events! Nige. "its only an opinion".

OK, lets start early in 2007. There is a joint open meeting at Ullswater with the Soling class at the early May bank holiday weekend. NOR not yet available, but will go out ASAP, and most Tempest Sailors know where UYC is - it is probably the club with the longest history of Tempest sailing on the planet! At the AGM, the possibility of opening the Last Blast up as a Fastsail event was discussed, and I was asked to test the water, but no feedback on this yet. Not sure how Carsington SC sailing committee would view this, but we are already sharing this event with the FF fleet. It has already been mentioned that Richard & SJ Thornhill had a whale of a time at Falmouth Week this year and intend to repeat the operation, hopefully with Dan Shaw sailing his boat as well. From feedback I have received already, this is a worthwhile event for anyone wanting a good holiday in the West Country. The Lord Birkett Trophy (Ullswater again) attracts 200 plus boats, and is the biggest dinghy / keelboat event in the North of the UK. That is a good showcase event, but we only seem to get UYC boats there in recent years. There is a gantry to transfer from road trailers to launching trolleys, so no problems with launching, but as with any event of this size, it pays to get there in good time. First full weekend in July. Watch the UYC website for details. The Soling fleet loved it this year and are coming back. Any other big or suitable events with craning facilities?

do you guys over there use any sort of handicaping to race against other boats? we are currently the only active tempest at GSC in Calgary so no matter what we do we're racing hanicap.
it's not the greatest racing as we don't really have another boat to compare ourselves to but i know that people are always talking about "that fast blue boat" after every race, and we try to go out to every social night that we can to promote the class.
i think it's more important to get the boat recognized at any events than just getting big turnout for a class only race.

Let's have the dates for next years agreed events published as soon as possible, especially the worlds as for those who are still working, they need to allocate some holidays, not just a long weekend. All I ever get told is "sometime in July"
One of the things that puts one or two of from travelling the length of England for an event is the thought of the M6 on a friday afternoon and sunday evening. Still hope to do more next year though

Latitude 38 got a great shot of us rounding Angel Island during the Great Pumpkin Regatta. Persuit race and we still had a Melges and Moore 24 behind us. www.deltanine.com/tempest.htmlThanks for the edit Nigel. Didn't mean to take up that much space. RN
