...wonderful article...written in the 70s by Roger and Marty Gilbert (US44).... Yes, I read that and it prompted my question about singlehanding for afternoon and weekend sails out in the harbor. I live on the shore in Boothbay Harbor, Maine and have a Shields class sloop I singlehand quite pleasantly. I'm looking for something smaller now as I get older and really want to get rid of the humongous truck I use to trailer the 5000# boat to and from storage in fall and spring. At the same time there's a local group of 21-24 foot keelboats who I'd like to compete well against in twice weekly open-to-all races. I don't want to get one of the local class boats (slow) or a J-22/24 (ugly and awkward to singlehand). As far as cruising or camping is concerned, my wife can NOT sleep comfortably on boats or camping out. The poor girl loves sailing and being on the water, but needs a nice bed in order to sleep well. It's B&Bs for us when we travel.

Glad you made it on board.
as already mentioned there is a couple of members on here worth talking to guitar and kmcabe both of them very knowledgeable and could possibly guide you towards a used boat in the US.
Definitely worth a PM I think!

the guy who used to own gael force (formerly celtic breeze) solo sailed all the time here on glenmore. i'll try to find out what kind of wind he had it in. i seem to remember he was out in some pretty good wind (for the prairies anyway!), he did not use the trapeze but i have heard of some 505 sailors up north who solo with the trap.

Did the Birkett (18 mile race on Ulllswater) one year single handed - OK up to Force 3. Three sail reaching whilst helming from the wire is an absolute gas!!

Dt, I singlehand my Tempest quite a bit. 22 knots (AW) was the highest wind I was out in. I'm 54 so have to watch the fatigue when in higher winds. Sail around San Francisco Bay singlehanded as well, once near the Gate winds will become a factor while alone. I have the telescopic BattleStix that extends to 72" I think. Flying the spinnaker from the trap is a experience you need to have. Top speed while singlehanding was 15 knots. Went overboard once, thinking I was hooked up I simply pushed off and found I was looking through a foot of ocean. Lucky I had one hand on the jib sheet and the other on the tiller. Simply tacked the boat, slid back in, tacked again and popped a beer. Cheers, Rick www.deltanine.com/tempest.html is my site.

Having a serious moment.... I have single handed in more than 12 knots, (one would immagine so given me new handle!) beating was a bit of a effort but then I'm only 12.5 stone (175ilbs thanks Mr Casio) apart from that I think everything else would be do able ... flying the kite may just get a sniff exciting though!
Ask Mr McCabe if you can try it on his shiney new Mk2 if he ever gets it... Preferably during a regatta!!

Rick Crewless,
Thanks for your response. I've sailed on SF Bay acouple of times and it's really something, but I doubt I'd be going there or the UK from Maine any time soon.
FYI there's a Tempest for sale in Washington State on ebay right now. It in the ebaymotors, other vehicles, sailboat section.
