the forum looks nice! I bought a kind of caravan to camp on, and to bring our Tempest to bigger water next summer. Now we are sailing on a pond the size of a bathtub. A trailer was out (dutch regulations) so we got to tow... -the new caravan... a little Shetland boat- Who has experience with towing a Tempest for longer distances? We have to cross the Rotterdam harbour, go through several locks. groeten van viv

I would tow along side. Make sure that the rudder (and preferably the prop - althogh this might be difficult to acheive) of the shetland is behind the tempest's transome. The boat with the ruder most aft is in controle, so this is very important!
Will you be crossing/using the deep water shipping lanes? That could be fun!

This will be the most busy crossing... We are not planning to mix with supertankers. You think it will be a problem to just tow behind the boat on longer stretches? My experience so far is that with a fixed rudder the Tempest behaves all-right. But I did not get a chance to try at higher speeds.

we tow a small dinghy behind dads 40' c&c, and we found that the best thing to do is have your normal bow line tied, as well as a line to the port and starboard fairleads, the two outer lines stop the towed boat from swinging left and right in the wake of the tow boat.

Hi Viv,
You mentioned the 'Dutch regulations'.
Which bit?
1. towing capacity of your car fails (trailer with or without brakes)? 2. No approved trailer ánd weight trailer + Tempest over 750 kg.?

stokka1 - We tried different ways and indeed it gives more stability but it meens also a lot of extra rope dangeling in the water in tight turns. @rob - Now we know that our trailer would have been legal on the road - But we need a place to sleep too ... and to get in and out of the water is also expensive. We have one week planned at the haringvliet. A lot better then the Kralingseplas. With little wind we tied the Tempest along side the little boat and with the mainsail we did navigate the little lake. With the two hulls at the right angle they do not touch when sailing.
